Synthroid can decrease the bone mineral density when used long-term. Thyroxine Sodium should be given cautiously in patients with history of cardiac disease. The dose of Thyroxine Sodium should be low in elderly patients and in children. Synthroid can precipitate thyrotoxicosis in patients with nodular thyroid disease. Synthroid need not be discontinued during pregnancy and hypothyroidism diagnosed during pregnancy should be promptly treated.

Synthroid is given as single daily dose, preferably one-half to one-hour before breakfast. The recommended dose of Synthroid is 1.7 mcg/kg/day. In elderly patients, the dose of Synthroid is 1 mcg/kg/day. The recommended starting dose of Thyroxine sodium in newborn infants is 10-15 mcg/kg/day.
