Benicar should not be given to pregnant women as it can cause fetal death, especially during the second and third trimester. Olmesartan can increase potassium levels in the blood and hence it has to be monitored all through the treatment period. The treatment with Olmesartan should be continued for 2 to 4 weeks even after the symptoms disappear. In patients with salt or volume depletion hypotension may occur on administration of Benicar. The patient should be kept in supine position and should administer normal saline to treat this transient hypotension.

The recommended starting dosage of Benicar is 20mg once daily, administered with or without food. The dose can be slowly increased after a period of 2 weeks to a maximum of 40mg/day.
