How does Verapamil / Generic of Calan work?

Guidelines before using Verapamil / Generic Calan

The patient should be cautioned to avoid alcohol as Verapamil prolongs the effects of alcohol. Calan should never be administered along with beta-blockers as it can cause additive sinus depression or conduction defects. Verapamil increases the plasma dioxin levels leading to toxicity. Calan should never be administered along with cardiac depressants like quinidine and disopyramide. Calan should be used with caution in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment. Verapamil is not safe to use in pregnant women, nursing mothers and in pediatric patients. The use of Verapamil is contraindicated in cardiogenic shock, second or third degree AV block, sick sinus syndrome and in atrial fibrillation.

What are the common dosages of Verapamil / Generic of Calan?

The recommended starting dosage of Calan in angina and essential hypertension is 80 mg thrice daily. The recommended starting dosage of Verapamil in elderly patients and in patients with decreased hepatic function is 40mg thrice daily. In arrhythmia the dosage of Verapamil range from 240 to 320mg/day in divided doses.
