Fluconazole

Fluconazole is an oral antifungal medication. It is indicated to treat fungal infections which can invade any part of the body including the mouth, esophagus, throat, bladder, lungs, genital area and blood like:

  • Yeast infection
  • Toenail fungus
  • Valley fever
  • Vaginal thrush
  • Thrush affecting the penis

It is also used to prevent infections in people with a weakened immune system due to diseases like AIDS, cancer treatment and bone marrow transplant. It’s also used to treat meningitis caused by fungus. It may also be used for purposes as determined by your physician. Fluconazole may also be effective in treating peritonitis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and disseminated infections due to Candida.

Fluconazole kills the fungi causing the infections by creaking holes in their cell membranes. These holes protect the fungi by preventing essential content from leaking out. Without the essential content, the fungi die and the infection clears up.
