Linezolid is a prescription drug used to treat bacterial infections like:
Linezolid is an antibiotic that belongs to the group known as oxazolidinones. It can only treat a specific sub-group of bacteria called Gram-positive bacteria. Its mechanism of action is different from other antibiotics because Linezolid is effective in gram-positive bacterial infections that are resistant to other antibiotics.
Linezolid interferes with the protein that bacteria need in order to grow and multiply. Interfering with the protein can stop the bacteria from growing and reproducing thus stopping also the infection from spreading.
Linezolid works in a different way from other types of antibiotic so it may provide a doctor with a different line of attack to new infections. It’s primarily bacteriostatic but it’s active against gram-positive bacteria for uncomplicated and complicated soft and skin tissue infections and hospital acquired-pneumonia. Linezolid is available here.
Linezolid is available in tablet form that you need to take orally. The recommended dose for an adult is 600 mg orally every 12 hours for 14 to 28 days. The dose for children under 12 years old is 10 mg per body kg every 8 hours for 14 days to 28 days. The dose for children 12 years of age above is 600 mg every 12 hours for 14 to 28 hours. You can take Linezolid with or without food. The length of your treatment depends on the type of infections you have. Take it exactly as directed. Do not take more than what is prescribed to you. Continue taking your medication even if you feel well.
