Prescribed for the Treatment of Tapeworm Infections

Albendazole is an anthelmintic prescription medication. It is prescribed for the treatment of tapeworm infections such as hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis. Neurocysticercosis is an infection of the nervous system caused by pork tapeworms. Cystic hydatid disease is an infection caused by dog tapeworm that infects the liver, lungs and the peritoneum. It is also used for the prevention of newly hatched insect larvae from growing and multiplying in the body. It may also be used for the purpose as determined by the physician.

Albendazole works by keeping the worm from absorbing the glucose or the sugar. This makes the worm loses its energy and die.

How to use Albendazole?

Take the medication orally or as directed by your physician. Take it with food. For children who are unable to swallow the tablet, they may chew the tablet first before swallowing with a glass of water.

  • Tapeworm infections (neurocysticercosis)

The usual recommended dose is 400mg two times a day for 8 to 30 days (over 60 kg). For those weighing below 60 kg, the dose is divided twice a day or 8 to 30 days but not to exceed 800mg per day.

  • Tapeworm infections (Cystic hydatid disease)

The dose is 400mg two times a day for 28 days (over 60 kg). For those weighing below 60 kg, the dose is divided twice a day for 28 days but not to exceed 800mg per day. The cycle is repeated for three times but there should be 14 days that is drug-free.

  • Pinworm

The dose is 400 mg once, repeat in two weeks

  • Fluke

The dose is based on weight. 10 mg/kg once

Use this medication exactly as directed by your physician. Do not skip any dose. Finish the entire course of the treatment. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while under this medication.

What are the side effects of Albendazole?

Some of the side effects are:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Temporary hair loss
  • Spinning sensation

Serious side effects are:

  • Allergic reaction with signs like hives, swelling of the face, tongue, throat and lips
  • Liver problems with signs like pain in the upper stomach, loss of appetite, feeling tired, dark urine and clay colored-stool

Important Information

  • Other medications may interact with Albendazole. These include vitamins, over-the-counter drugs and herbal products.
  • This drug can weaken your immune system. A frequent blood test is needed every two weeks to check your liver function.
  • Do not take this drug if you are allergic to any of its ingredient.
