Risperidone

Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic prescription drug. It is prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia symptoms in adults and children at least 13 years of age. Symptoms may include loss of interest in life, a mental illness that causes unusual thinking and strong inappropriate emotions.

Risperidone is also prescribed to treat episodes of mania or mixed emotions in adults and children 10 years of age. It is also indicated for the treatment of symptoms in autistic children 5 to 16 years of age.

Like other antipsychotic medications, Risperidone affects the way the brain communicates with the nerve cells.  It works by inhibiting the activity of dopamine and serotonin receptors. Autism

The initial dose for children 5 to 17 years of age is 0.25 mg a day. The doctor may increase the dose to 0.5 mg a day after 4 days of treatment.

Take the medication exactly as directed. You can take it with or without food. To get the most benefit, use it regularly. This medication can control the symptoms of your condition but it will not cure your conditions.

Things to Remember

• Risperidone is not suitable for patients with dementia. Studies have shown that older adults with dementia are at higher risk of death when they take anti-psychotic drugs like this.
• Do not take Risperidone with tea or cola. Take it with a glass of water.
• Keep using the medication even if you feel well. Your symptoms may improve after several weeks of treatment. If your symptoms do not improve, consult your physician right away.
