Indomethacin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It helps to reduce pain in above conditions. The FDA first approved the drug in January 1965.

How does Indomethacin work?

Indomethacin belongs to a group of drugs known as NSAIDs. Hormone prostaglandin is a natural chemical produced in the body. This leads to fever and pain due to inflammation. The above drug blocks the synthesis of a certain enzyme. The enzyme is responsible to produce prostaglandin. Low levels of this hormone provides relief from fever, pain, and swelling.

How to take Indomethacin?

Above drug is available in the form of a capsule of 25 mg. The dosage depends on the type of pain, age, and tolerance of the patient.

Adult: –

  • Initial dose- 25 mg to 75 mg (one time or in 2-3 divided doses) in a day.
  • Maximum single dose-100 mg.
  • Maximum dose- 200 mg in a day.

Children: –

  • Child <2 years: – Not recommended for children younger than 2 years with some exception.
  • Child >2 years: the dose is decide as per the need of the patient.

Comments: –

  • Your Doctor may need to adjust the dose.
  • How often you should take it, depends on the condition.
  • Take all the doses in time to get best results.
  • Take it with food or antacid. This avoids stomach upset.

What are the uses of Indomethacin?

Indomethacin is used to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation in following conditions.

  • Gouty arthritis.
  • Shoulder pain.
  • Joint stiffness.
  • Degenerative heap disease.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis.

Clinically it is useful in the following conditions:

  • Delay premature labor.
  • Reduce amniotic fluid in the sac.
  • To close patent ductus arteriosus post-delivery of a child.

What are the precautions in taking Indomethacin?

Talk to your Doctor prior to take the above drug. Certain conditions may create problems. Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions.

  • Liver disease.
  • History of Parkinson’s disease.
  • Psychotic disorder.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Kidney disease.
  • high blood levels of potassium.
  • Recent heart bypass surgery.
  • Inflammation of rectum or anus.
  • Heart disease.
  • Bleeding disorders.
  • Stomach or intestinal ulcer.

Inform your doctor if you are,

  • In the third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Feeding mother.
  • Allergic to above drug.
  • Taking other NSAIDs.

Inform regarding all other medicines you take.
