Venlafaxine

Venlafaxine is a prescription antidepressant drug. It is a first-line therapy among patients with depression. It is also indicated for the treatment of conditions like:

Take this medication with food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Remember that this medication can only control your depression. It will not cure your condition.

Things to Remember

  • This medication has a black box warning. Studies have found an increased suicidal thought among children and young adults.
  • Do not stop taking this medication. A sudden stop can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as sleep disorder, anxiety, nausea and vomiting.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use this medication.
  • Discuss with your doctor the risk and benefits of using this medication.
  • Do not use this medication with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI).
  • Combining NSAIDs, aspirin and warfarin with this drug may cause bleeding.
  • Seek medical attention right away in case of serious side effects such as seizures, abnormal bleeding and severe allergic reactions.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol because alcohol can augment the sleepiness effect of this drug.
